Petrol Watch

With fuel prices the way they are, it is nice to know that Wangaratta has the cheapest fuel for many miles around.

Currently Wangaratta has unleaded fuel available at 122.9 per litre, and even cheaper with shopping docket and other discount schemes. This is much cheaper than surrounding districts and towns. Furthermore, Autogas is currently available at 61.9!

Since Wangaratta is also a great place to shop, why not save both ways and do your Christmas shopping in Wangaratta, while filling up with cheaper fuel?

Meet The Candidates Report
Written by Executive Officer
Thursday, 06 November 2008

Business Wangaratta couldn't have asked for a better response by the candidates for the upcoming 2008 Council Elections for the Rural City of Wangaratta.

While only 40 members of our business community and the public enjoyed an informative and vigourious discussion by the 12 of 13 candidates, the set questions and questions from the floor were answered with lively comments while keeping a level head.

Two key areas Business Wangaratta has been working on for several years is a General Marketing Campaign and a solution to the Car Parking & Traffic Congestion issues that have plagued our town. The response to questions relating to these two topics were many and varied and proved that co-operative working parties are the way to go forward with both issues.

Another key issue discussed was 5am Trading for Wangaratta's pubs and clubs. Nearly all of the candidates seemed to agreed that 5am closing is not necessarily the problem - it is the intake of alcohol by the patrons to these establishments. Whatever the case - while progress has been made in the past - the next Council will need to address this issue to further reduce the vandalism and violence that happens periodically in and around our Central Business District.

The other main issue that was raised was the moving of the Sunday Market at Wareena Park to Avian Park. This was certainly a touchy subject with some of the candidates and there were comments from "it should be moved to a better location" to "there is nothing wrong with where it is now".

As there is with anything these days, the candidates showed that there is a very diverse selection for the rate payers of the Rural City of Wangaratta to choose from - and seven of these candidates will be on the Council for the next 4 years.
